Bearings operating outside their recommended temperature range can suffer from premature wear, lubrication failure, or even catastrophic failure.


    Typical Operating Temperature Range

    Most standard spherical roller bearings are designed to operate reliably within a temperature range of -30°C to 150°C (-22°F to 302°F). This range can vary slightly depending on the manufacturer, cage material, and type of lubrication used.


    High Temperature Applications

    For applications requiring higher operating temperatures — such as in steel mills, kilns, or heavy-duty industrial gearboxes — heat-stabilized spherical roller bearings are available. These are often rated for temperatures up to 200°C (392°F) or even higher, depending on the steel grade and internal clearances.

    In high-temperature environments, the choice of lubricant is just as critical as the bearing material. Special high-temperature greases or oil lubrication systems must be used to prevent lubricant breakdown, which could otherwise lead to bearing failure.


    Low Temperature Considerations

    On the lower end, spherical roller bearings can operate at temperatures as low as -40°C (-40°F) or below, provided that suitable low-temperature lubricants are used. At such temperatures, the viscosity of the lubricant increases, so it's essential to use oils or greases specifically formulated for cold environments.


    Effects of Temperature on Bearing Life

    Operating a bearing outside its specified temperature range can significantly reduce its lifespan. High temperatures can degrade the lubricant, soften bearing steel, and cause expansion that affects internal clearances. Conversely, low temperatures can lead to poor lubrication flow and increased startup torque.
